Sexualbrott

I think I like this ledare (as far as that is possible without having read Nicklas Hägen’s piece in Meddelanden från Åbo akademi), especially its sober conclusion that ”[d)et måste få räcka med jorden”. It also brings up masses of memories.
About the fact that Hägen’s piece deals with ”övergreppen inom Finlands svenska metodistkyrka”, to my own mind comes the memory of a rather young pastor who was for a while preparing a group of youngsters (among them also me) for confirmation and who struck us by his rather extreme claims concerning, e.g., curing people by prayer, and his strangely sharp reactions to anything sexual. And suddenly he was not there any more. According to rumours (which were strengthened by the way how persons who knew were talking – or, rather, keeping quiet – about the matter) he had seriously misbehaved sexually. Thinking about him, about the Old Testament, and about Catholic brochures for youngsters which I picked up on other occasions, I am inclined to suspect that strict versions of Christianity (especially Catholic ones, but that young pastor was Lutheran) are strongly attractive to sexual neurotics, who may then tend to misfunction if they are exposed to sexual temptations during their work. Aside of this, there may of course be the possibility that also pedofils are straightaway attracted by the possibilities offered by work with youngsters.
As to the extent of the problem, there was in 1996 a study by Sariola and Uutela, who had been distributing questionnaires at schools and also provided possibilities to fill them in undisturbed (with access to advice if wanted). Among the girls, incest ”with the father or stepfather (or mother’s boyfriend) was reported by 0,5 percent”. The term ”incest” means here anything from ”proposing to do something sexual”, ”fondling”, etc. up to ”sexual intercourse”. The number of girls who, among 3769 who had answered the questionnaire, reported sexual intercourse with their fathers or stepfathers was 1 (one) – ”… an outright rape of a 14-year-old daughter by the biological father”.
One can compare to this the public reactions to the POSSIBILITY of sexual misuse of children. A wave of fears to this direction was triggered by one Jeffrey M. Masson, who was psychologically incompetent (he went through a training as a psychoanalyst but very obviously failed to grasp essential points) but wrote in 1984 one book in support of Freud’s early seduction theory (which Freud then gave up) plus in 1992 and 1993 two further books as (seemingly) his personal revenge on psychoanalysis. The books were widely read, Helsinki town library was buying a so big number of one that I think that they must have been meant for a study circle. The result of this wave were in Finland larger numbers of steady relations breaking up, the careers of some social workers being finished or seriously spoiled, and at least one (probable) death. And in other societies similar events.
As to that death, it was some communal politician in Hangö who had the bad luck to fall (from afar) in love with a 14-year old girl, to whom he then also tried to establish a contact. The result was a scandal with huge excitement and court procedures. I tried to write something more moderate about the matter in Ny Tid, but at the time the redaktion was in the hands of women only, who refused to publish my piece. Also in the public excitement it was very obviously especially women who were actively escalating the matter. The politician managed still to write a book about the experience of being hunted that way, but died then during the next spring in a somewhat strange accident.
In USA the wave resulted in a number of absolutely hair-raising court cases and also in this: The authors Rind, Tromovitch and Bauserman had in 1998 and 1999 published the results of a meta-analysis of a very large number of publications about the effects of sexual misuse of under-aged youngsters, with the result that the effects did really not seem to be THAT dramatic; and early in July 1999 the US House of Representatives voted for an official condemnation of that meta-analysis (no votes against, 13 abstentions). Seemingly one did not want to disagree with possible voters …
As to the question from where so much excitement just about the possibility of sexual abuse of children, I see a number of reasons:
We are primates, to whom (a) sex in any form is anyway an exciting topic, and who (b) anyway tend to react VERY strongly if children of their group seem to be in danger; in addition, the idea of sexual abuse rouses easily associations of ”rape”, which (already for anatomical reasons) is mostly perpetrated by men (and certainly the victims of such public hunts are nearly always men), which gives (c) to women the very welcome occasion to assume a morally superior position, which at least radical feminists can use to black-paint men still further. Add to this (d) the outraged reactions of representatives of strict Christianity plus (e) the media, which will not fail to make use of this exciting (= well-selling) idea, and you have a perhaps sufficient explanation for the (in fact out-of-proportion) striking reactions and opinions of the public.
