Jag har länge planerat en dystopisk bok. En bok i vilken jag skulle spilla ut all min framtidsångest. Det skulle bli en skolatlas från framtiden. Idén var att ta tag i alla profetior och alla väl underbyggda framtidsteorier och försöka sammanställa dem till en dystert humoristisk bok. En bok med mörka framtidsutsikter, ihopskrivna till en samhällsavspeglande nutid, fast i framtiden. Jag tror dock inte att boken blir av. Av den enkla orsaken att framtidsutsikterna är alltför tragiska. Med det menar jag inte att jag avskräcktes av hur negativa forskningsrapporterna är. Tvärtom. Det jag möttes av i expertprofetiorna var framtidstro och lösningar. Det skrämde mig mer än något annat.
Klimatförändringarna är förstås inget nytt, och klimatskeptikerna i seriösare sammanhang är lätträknade. Det har gått så långt att till och med storföretag talar om det växlande klimatet och vad som måste göras åt det. Det låter lovande, tänkte jag, och sökte upp rapporter som exempelvis Goldman Sachs delat med sig av. Jag inser nu att jag var naiv. Varför skulle ett storföretag ge sig i kast med att stoppa den globala uppvärmningen ifall det innebar reducerad vinst? Hade jag inte sett nog av flygbolag som utgivit sig för att vilja värna om framtiden genom att använda förnybar energi på sina flygplatser, medan de utvidgade nätet av flygrutter och fortsatte att förstöra samma framtid? Givetvis var Goldman Sachs lösningar både pragmatiska och deprimerande. De talade om hur dyrt det kommer att bli att ändra storstäders infrastruktur när vattennivån stiger. Hur ska vi nå fram till våra kunder när New York är Venedig? Jag insåg att detta var ett dött spår.
Sedan hittade jag olika vetenskapliga tidskrifter, där amatörforskare fått skicka in sina framtidshypoteser, för att sedan låta proffsforskare berätta hur troliga de är. Till exempel ”I framtiden kommer vi att kunna kontrollera vädret med maskiner”. Detta tror forskarna att är en stor möjlighet i framtiden. Att de stora naturkatastroferna som kommer av att vi släppt ut för mycket växthusgaser kan hjälpas av genom att vi släpper ut mera växthusgaser. Jag dödade det spåret också, om det inte redan var dött. Jag dödade hela idén.
Jag föredrar ångest framom förljuget hopp. Ångesten är påtaglig, den är ärlig och trolig. Jag vill inte bli ljugen för, i alla fall inte på ett betryggande vis. Säg mig hellre att världen ska gå under än att det mesta av världen ska gå under, men säg mig aldrig att allt kommer att bli bra, för det kommer det inte att bli. Så pass vuxen har jag ändå blivit. I min drömvärld går allt åt helvete, och den drömmen kan jag leva i. Men jag vet väl i slutändan att det aldrig blir en skräll, endast ett gnäll. Det blir aldrig något helvete, det blir bara lite sämre för vart år som går. Det kanske finns en bok att skriva om det, men knappast en som säljer.

It is of course such a question whether really every hope is just the result of deception, and IF there is some hope, on what it is based. On 21.02. I came across a note in my email that Stanford University had got together 47 peer reviewed research papers from 13 independent groups with, together, 91 authors, who all agreed that there is no technical hindrance from getting by 2050 ALL necessary energy from renewable sources. And in my contribution to the blog of Tigern (written on 26.12.19, titled ”From where Energy?”) I wrote myself pretty much the same. Thus, technological problems are no hindrance, and if it should become necessary ”att kontrollera vädret med maskiner” (if possible), then it would still not mean that we ”släpper ut mera växthusgaser” because we could produce also that energy from renewable sources.
But of course, if I claim that the technology is not the problem it certainly does not mean that there were NO problems. There are! But they are elsewhere: In the most general terms one could say that the biggest problem is that we are humans. And let’s begin with our politicians. It is not a very long time ago when one third of the members of the Chinese government were engineers, i.e. presumably people who at least understood something about technology and its problems and also possibilities. If we look at our politicians, well, they are (to a degree) well-meaning, but of technology they do presumably not know much, i.e. they are (in these matters) rather helpless amateurs. Thus, they look for guidance. Guidance comes from lobbyists or from firms who have projects to offer – the projects being based on already existing technology which is already at the firms’ disposal and by which the firms are hoping to earn. And our economists offer as guidance the idea that it is the politicians’ very job to distribute money to firms on whose entrepreneurial initiative the very well-being of simply everybody is based (anyway according to our economical experts). And this way one can even produce jobs, which also helps to win elections …
What is forgotten in this is that there is no place for even those ridiculous few years which one would need to develop existing technology so far further that one could REALLY cover all energy needs already long before 2050 from renewable sources. Instead, politicians in their ignorance are open to guidance by lobbies (who desperately want to prevent technological progress) and firms (who want to earn by technology which they can already offer), while the politicians’ main concern is anyway how to get the money for next year’s budget together without irritating their (mostly also ignorant) electorate too much. Altogether, ignorance everywhere and all over the place …
And what about solutions? Well, Finland has a highly educated population, doesn’t it. But unluckily very many of these brilliant heads are ”kulturmänniskor”, i.e. people who will always eagerly applaud if somebody formulates a problem (also the climate problem) in a brilliant way but will be very ”förvånad” if somebody should suggest that they could lift a finger (or even two) for the purpose of actually solving the problem. And the media spend quite a bit of space on cultivating this sense of ”kultur” (which one could call ”entertainment for educated tastes” … – but, REALLY, ENTERTAINMENT). All of which leaves it to the politicians to (a) be aware of their ignorance (no need to publicly admit it, but it should be realized), (b) to invite suggestions from ”financially less interested” sides (such as armchair and other inventors), (c) to submit the incoming suggestions to the experts, which ARE available (e.g. in VTT), (d) to recruit some interested students and researchers in the existing technical universities and provide the money for the necessary development work, and (e) organize the production of the helpful technology (managers for it can be hired, money can be raised by crowd sourcing).
And if some kulturmänniska should think that this does not leave any space for people like her/him, there is always the possibility to present good ideas (like the above?) in good, even brilliant, formulations to the public, and be it just in the form of letters to some editors. It would ANYWAY be more helpful than still some dystopian book (although nothing should hinder from doing both, writing letters to editors AND writing some dystopian book to earn reputation – and perhaps even some little money – as an author).
